Jupiter and Venus Came to See Me

While the planets Jupiter and Venus are still close enough to be captured in one picture, I had them pose for a photo in the morning of July 28, 2012 at 4:15 AM using my iPad camera pointing east through my bathroom window.

The upper star is Jupiter, and the brighter one lower down is Venus.

At shutter time, the distance from Earth to Jupiter was about 512,369,000 miles and decreasing at the rate of about 15 miles per second; the distance from earth to Venus was about 52,813,000 miles and increasing at the rate of about 8 miles per second.

Jupiter's diameter is 10.9 times that of Earth's; it takes 11.9 earth years to go around the Sun.
Venus's diameter is 0.92 times that of Earth's; it takes only 7.4 months to go around the Sun.
